Do I Need a Rough-in Kit?
The short answer to that question is: No.

Why? The reason why a company might promote the idea of rough-in kits is to capture the market of people currently constructing homes. In all reality, because the appearance of a room can change so much between the framing stage and the finished stage, it's more prudent to do your final speaker placements when the room is completed.

It's always smart to have a general idea of where you want your speakers mounted in the framing stage, and to run the wire out into the desired stud bays on either side of your preferred location while it's still fully accessible. Speaker placement, however, should wait until the wallboard is up, and you can look at the room as it will be when you're living in it. It's only then that you'll be able to take into account the placement of decorative items, such as mirrors, paintings, furniture, etc., which is harder to conceptualize when the room is a cage of two by fours. With a rough-in kit, you are committed to the location with.

At that point, you need only take the general measurements you made where you've made your wires available (and pictures if you are really resourceful) and use those to pinpoint the final placement of your speakers. Use the templates that come with your in-wall speakers and cut the drywall to those specifications. Then it's only a matter of using the simple installation systems both in-wall and in-ceiling speakers provide to secure it to the drywall.
